QuoteMicrosoft Ordered to Stop Selling Word
By Joe at 10:47 AM - Aug 12th, 2009

Most people cannot imagine using Office without word. I mean really, most people can't imagine doing a report without word. This nightmare could become a reality as just yesterday a Texas judge ruled that Microsoft cannot sell Word after a law suit against i4i Inc.

It's been ruled that Microsoft is prohibited from selling or importing any version of Microsoft Word into the US that can open .XML, .DOCX., OR DOCM files due to a patent infringement. Microsoft has been given 60 days to comply. Microsoft also has to pay more than $290 million in "damages."

The injunction states:

Microsoft Corporation is hereby permanently enjoined from performing the following actions with Microsoft Word 2003, Microsoft Word 2007, and Microsoft Word products not more than colorably different from Microsoft Word 2003 or Microsoft Word 2007 (collectively ââ,¬Å"Infringing and Future Word Productsââ,¬Â) during the term of U.S. Patent No. 5,787,449:

1. selling, offering to sell, and/or importing in or into the United States any
Infringing and Future Word Products that have the capability of opening a .XML,
.DOCX, or .DOCM file (ââ,¬Å"an XML fileââ,¬Â) containing custom XML;

2. using any Infringing and Future Word Products to open an XML file
containing custom XML;

3. instructing or encouraging anyone to use any Infringing and Future Word
Products to open an XML file containing custom XML;

4. providing support or assistance to anyone that describes how to use any infringing and Future Word Products to open an XML file containing custom XML;

and

5. testing, demonstrating, or marketing the ability of the Infringing and Future
Word Products to open an XML file containing custom XML.

A spokesperson from Microsoft however has stated that Microsoft disagrees with the ruling and will certainly appeal.

Nao è bem "deixar de vender", apenas têm de tirar a compatibilidade com esse tipo de ficheiros. Basta um patch e jà està.
There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

Sim... e a barraca é só no US. Mas ainda por cima o problema é exactamente com o formato Office Open XML que eles tanto "lutaram" para destronar o OpenDocument como dejure standard (aliás neste momento os dois são standard).
