Windows Vista sells 40M licenses in 100 days
Microsoft credits consumers shift to the digital lifestyle with creating the fastest selling operating system in history.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- Microsoft has sold nearly 40 million Windows Vista licenses in the first 100 days that the latest version of the operating system has been available, Chairman Bill Gates said Tuesday.

Gates said an accelerating consumer shift to digital lifestyles had helped make the operating system the fastest selling in history, and that premium editions have accounted for 78 percent of Vista sales.

Windows operating systems run on more than 95 percent of the world\\'s computers and represent the Redmond, Washington-based company\\'s biggest profit driver.

Vista, which Microsoft introduced on Jan. 30, also marks the first major operating system upgrade in more than five years from the world\\'s biggest software maker.

During a speech in Los Angeles, Gates said the company named its next-generation Windows Server software -- formerly known as "Longhorn" -- Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server is the server operating system equivalent to the Vista PC operating system, with an emphasis on many of the same features, such as better security.

Microsoft (up $0.17 to $31.04, Charts, Fortune 500), which controlled an estimated two-thirds of the global server software maker in 2006, has said the product is on track for a debut in the second half of 2007.

The company also said three new hardware manufacturers -- Gateway (down $0.05 to $1.78, Charts), Lacie (Charts) and Medion (Charts) -- plan to build products for Windows Home Server.

That software is aimed at helping families with multiple PCs easily centralize, share and protect digital content, such as pictures, music, documents and videos.

Bill Gates anunciou ontem durante a WinHEC 2007 que a Microsoft já vendeu perto de 40 milhões de licenças do Windows Vista, apenas 100 dias depois do lançamento de Janeiro para o mercado de consumo. O sistema operativo é assim o de venda mais rápida da história.

As versões premium foram preferidas por 78 por cento dos utilizadores, o que segundo a Microsoft demonstra a procura de experiências mais ricas e a mudança acelerada para estilos de vida digitais.

A aposta da indústria é também relevante para este sucesso e existem actualmente mais de 10 mil produtos de hardware e software com o logo "Works with Windows Vista" ou o mais exigente "Certified for Windows Vista". Milhares de outros títulos e 1,9 milhões de equipamentos são já compatíveis com o novo sistema operativo.

O fundador da Microsoft salientou também nesta conferência que o impacto económico do Windows Vista e do Windows Server 2008, conhecido como Windows Server Longhorn e ainda em versão beta, ultrapassam em muito a própria empresa de software. Com base num estudo da IDC para o mercado norte-americano, a empresa diz que por cada dólar de receita que a Microsoft vai gerar em 2008 com o Windows Vista e o Windows Server 2008, o ecosistema de tecnologia ganha aproximadamente 18 dólares.

A IDC prevê também que em 2008 serão vendidos mais de 120 mil milhões de dólares em produtos e serviços relacionados com o Windows Vista e o Windows Server 2008.

O Windows Server 2008 é considerado um componente essencial para a próxima geração de inovação em hardware, que integra tecnologia de virtualização, processadores multicores e aplicações de 64 bits. A versão Beta 3 do Windows Server Longhorn já foi descarregada mais de 100 mil vezes desde o seu lançamento há três semanas e a versão final deverá ser enviada para produção no final deste ano.

realmente...a china nao deve interessar a microsoft e o brasil tambem e excluido visto que prai 90% do povo nao ta pra gastar dinheiro que dava pra ir comprar umas guaranas e sentar a peida na cadeira e tar a jogar no pentium2 todo remendado com linux... :x

não é por essa razão, mas sim por o governo da china ter mandado fazer um linux para a china para ser destribuido de graça, por isso ninguem compra windows

Tamos a falar de um governo semi-comunista é natural que usem o linux, achas que iam comprar windows aos milhoes para dar ao pessoal quando podem ter linux de graça?

eles não ião comprar o windows para oferecer, eles apenas ofereceram uma escolha melhor para as pessoas e mesmo esse SO não é o unico pois só têm 60% de utilização no pc\\'s os outros 40% são ocupados na maioria por outros linux e uma pequena parte por windows

Eu gosto de um SO que trabalhe, tem é que trabalhar sem eu ter esforço nenhum para andar a mexer em configuraçoes etc. Por isso n gostei do ubuntu porque é so andar a fazer cenas no root, mas gostei do puppy linux, experimentem esse que é excelente ^^
